Let’s get into another student feature shall we? There is always an underlying drive that pushes individuals to externally identify themselves. Standing out from the crowd is an admirable and unforgettable feat. Meet Marie, a MIT/Women’s Studies student who gave me the perfect explanation of why she does what she does. Of course she rocks it in the only way that she can. With a few simple words I asked: What makes you undeniably you?
“Well I want to be a civil rights lawyer in the future and this stems from my love of feminism and all its intersections. Justine Skye is my hair inspo. She's one of the first black women I saw with such a fun colour in her hair and I've been a purple unicorn ever since. I’m a music lover. Duh. Right now I'm really in love with Black-French/Cuban sisters Ibeyi. Their music is inspirational, beautiful, and strongly related to their culture.
In terms of my septum? It was probably the most impulsive thing I've ever done. Originally I really wanted a piercing that wouldn't be obvious (clearly that didn't work out) and when I got to the piercing shop I got talked into getting a septum. I'm glad it worked out though because I love the way I look. My style is mostly made up of me being bored and in deep need of change in my life. It’s the only thing I have control over you know? I don't really care how people perceive me or whether I get stared at because that's when I know I've achieved what I wanted with my appearance. The grey hair doesn't come from a deep need to be an old lady (contrary to popular belief haha). But yeah, I like that people think it's different although I really don't think so.
Oh and I love makeup. It all goes back to the style and social perception thing. Makeup is fun and allows me to be on my game all the time. The first dark lipstick I bought was black cherry by Revlon (highly recommended) and I haven't gone back ever since. I wear lipstick everyday, seriously every single day. I'm not me without it and my eyeliner wing stays sharp. Anyway, I love my style and when other people appreciate it but I never do it for approval. It plays such a large part in my life that my best friend and I made a Youtube channel to share it with the world (YouTube.com/streetfigures). And I guess that’s everything that makes me, well me
