Bustier: H&M Ponte Leggings: Abercrombie & Fitch Blazer: Smart Set Ankle Boots: Kenneth Cole

I love the all-black-everything, minimalist look that appears nonstop during Fall. Two problems though: I never wear all black and I can barely leave my house without wearing some sort of statement piece. So for this street style, I decided to try something a little different. I ditched all of my jewellery and let the accents on my clothes be my statement! I’m slowly developing a fancy for exposed zippers on black clothing. As such, I paired an exposed front-zip bustier with moto-inspired, Ponte leggings. I threw a blazer on over top to give my look an ounce of “young professional.” And to top it all off, I threw on my favourite pair of- pardon my French- bad-a$$-moto-inspired leather ankle boots!

Although the winter season seems to be fast-approaching, there is still no reason to give up our favourite Fall trend; Plaid. Contrary to what people may think of when they hear "plaid"; a baggy, Curt Cobain styled, button down shirt, the striped, multicoloured pattern comes in a variety of clothing items. If you feel like your closet lacks diversity and excitement, incorporating plaid into your style may be just what you need. So, without further adieu, here are some plaid looks for all of you who, like myself, plan to hold on to this trend until frost-bite becomes an issue. The Boyfriend Flannel Shirt: Because who needs a boyfriend when you can just wear a "boyfriend flannel shirt"? This item is super comfortable and laid-back, but is also versatile enough to be worn in a more formal setting. Complete the casual look with a pair of boyfriend jeans and combat boots, or dress it up with a statement necklace/earrings, a skinny jean and a pair of wedges. The Plaid Scarf: With the weather getting cooler, it might be wise to throw on a scarf before heading out the front door. The crisp lines and contrasting colours of a plaid scarf instantly make a simple outfit look chic and well thought-out. Throw it over any plain top or knit-sweater, then layer with a form flattering coat and you're set to conquer the cold (while looking fabulous at the same time). The Plaid Skirt:
If you're trying to find a unique way of incorporating plaid into your style, a plaid skirt a-la-Clueless is always a great option. This item is sure to add vivacity to an otherwise plain outfit. Pair with a plain long sleeved top or chunky sweater, add some knee high socks and a pair of booties, and you'll have people asking "Is this like a Noxzema commercial, or what?" Clueless reference aside, the plaid skirt is worth a try. By Adriana Monachino Where did you get your outfit? "The jacket is from a local designer in London named Lin Zhao. She has a store on Richmond-row called RYCE fashion. The RETROD dress is from Winners, the flats from Aldo as well as the backpack, and the rings are from Pandora."
What inspired you? "Fall. Fall is definitely my favorite time of the year. I love the cool weather because it gives me a reason to wear jackets or large sweaters and all of the rich earthy tones I get to wear are just a bonus. I find those are my favorite colors to wear, they're neutral yet still have color and a sort of calmness to them. It also gives me a reason to sport my Mac viva lipstick.. A more vampy look" How would you describe your style? "It suits my mood honestly. If it's gloomy and kind of gross outside I have no problem wearing sweatpants and rain boots but on a beautiful day like this there's really no excuse for me, if I look good l feel good." By Katia Barton It's always refreshing to see that 8:30 classes aren't a problem for this student who consistently comes to class in a style all her own. Neutral in colour palette, her combination of an oversized jean jacket and billowy overalls definitely peaked my interest.
What fashion item do you wish will have an instantaneous revival? I have to go with midcentury dresses and skirts. What style detail do you think completes any outfit? Little frilly lace socks and the way you fold your jeans, yes to cuffed jeans. Since we're in the midst of autumn, what kind of shoes have you been drooling over? A pair of low black doc Martens If you could could choose one store to bring to London what would it be? Oh that's hard, I don't have a favourite store but I'd love a London version of Toronto's Queen St. West. Can we pick it up and move it over here? Either that or more thrift stores because there are not enough! By Tara Magloire When it comes to fashion, there is nothing that can rain on this girl's parade. Chunky blanket scarves and high heel booties. Do you have any fashion advice for our F&LS blog readers? Simplicity makes a bold fashion statement. How would you describe your personal style? Neutral and simplistic with a pop of accessories The cold weather is here and it’s here to stay. Golden hues and crisp air bathe the hoodie-wearing masses, and Fall fashion is quickly gaining it's annual prominence. Scarves, knits, and light jackets will become common place, but for those that opt to stand out, the sophisticated turtleneck is worth pursuing.
Whether your style caters to a chunky knit or a more classic black, playing up textures is a great way to experiment with this staple layering piece. The classic black turtleneck is a great backdrop for minimal necklaces and warm golds, while the chunkier knit plays with the androgynous look many woman are looking to perfect. If you're feeling bold, a gutsy velvet will surely draw a curious eye. Whatever your taste, take a leap of faith and try out this piece. Need some ideas? Mix and match the velvet with a leather letterman jacket. Don’t be afraid to play with texture, more often then not they compliment each other. A chunky knit pairs well with a neutral mid length duster and loose fitting cinched trouser. Take advantage of the season and style outside your comfort zone. By Tara Magloire
I met Becky in first year where in a sea of Free City sweats, she stood out in a patterned pair of teal pants. Her outfits serve as inspiration for my own, and she has a personality as sweet as her style! I met up with Becky today to get the low-down on her outfit, inspiration, and how she views her own personal style.
Program: Media, Information and Technoculture What she’s wearing: Michael Kors sweater, her roommate’s tee, Buffalo brand jeans, shoes from H&M, Michael Kors bag and Tiffany jewelry. Where she gets her inspiration: Everywhere from Nicole Richie’s Instagram to her bedroom floor. Becky shared that in her messy bedroom, she’ll see a jacket on the floor next to a skirt she hadn’t thought of wearing it with, and an outfit is born! How she defines her personal style: Ever changing. It completely depends on her mood, but she enjoys juxtaposing girly items with edgier ones for an outfit that is unconventionally chic.
